Purity vs identity: reading a peptide report in Saskatoon

The two measurements

HPLC purity. What fraction of this sample is a single species? A high figure says the material is homogeneous. It says nothing about identity.

Mass spectrometry. Is that species the peptide on the label? The observed molecular mass is compared against the expected value for the stated sequence.

An analysis describes the material it was run on. Obvious in a lab, routinely ignored in purchasing, where a product-line certificate gets treated as though it characterises whatever arrives.

Check the vial before you use it

Every vial we ship carries its own QR code. Scanning it opens the third-party lab report for the exact batch that vial was filled from: HPLC purity, mass-spec identity, appearance, the testing lab and the date. Scan a sample at /track before you order anything.

Four things to confirm on arrival:

  1. The batch number on the label matches the report the code opens.
  2. The seal and stopper are intact.
  3. The lyophilized cake is dry and whole, not collapsed, shrunken or tacky.
  4. The colour matches what the report describes.

Why does mass spectrometry matter if purity is already reported?+

They answer different questions. Purity reports what fraction of the sample is a single species. Mass spectrometry establishes whether that species is the compound named on the label. High purity of an unintended compound still reports well on purity.

What purity should a research peptide show?+

Commonly above 95% by HPLC. That figure alone is incomplete without an identity confirmation, and the expected molecular mass differs per peptide, so identity is a per-product check.

What makes a batch report trustworthy?+

A batch number matching your vial, a named independent laboratory, a test date close to the fill date, HPLC purity with the method stated, and an observed mass matching the expected value for that peptide.
